The Inside-Out Newsletter
To keep our community updated on what's new, The Inside-Out Center has launched a newsletter to be circulated on the first of each month. The Inside-Out Newsletter serves to recap the previous month's events, share Inside-Out stories, and promote upcoming opportunities to get involved.
September 2024

The September 2024 newsletter features upcoming Zoom conversations, including one with Reiko Hillyer of Lewis & Clark College. The newsletter also highlights opportunities for authors in the Inside-Out network to facilitate discussions about their books or individual Inside-Out programs. Additionally, the newsletter includes an article highlighting Inside-Out alumnus Michael Griggs overcoming adversity and guiding other formerly incarcerated students, and a piece on Inside-Out Instructor Felix Rosado teaching courses on restorative justice at Chestnut Hill College.

The August 2024 newsletter highlights various topics discussed in Zoom conversations over the summer and encourages participation in upcoming sessions for the Fall and Spring semesters. This edition of the newsletter announces a discussion surrounding Creative Solutions to Holding Inside-Out Courses in County Jails with Tara Gilligan from Lafayette College and a college class hosted by Arcadia and Inside-Out on the topic of storytelling. Additionally, two of Inside-Out’s formerly incarcerated coaches / dialogue partners, Kenny Butler and Joe Schwartz, have been chosen to do a summer-long fellowship through a partnership between the Samuel Centre on Social Connectedness and The Inside-Out Center. Other stories include the Kintock Group celebrating the end of the spring semester with Temple University and Goshen College's course titled "Justice In Our Lives."

In the January 2024 edition of the Inside-Out newsletter, we share a heartfelt remembrance of the Inside-Out 25th+ anniversary along with a 25th+ Google feedback form. Additional stories include trained instructor Rhea Ballard Thrower beginning her one-year term as the Association of Research Libraries vice president/president-elect at University of Illinois Chicago, an Inside-Out program connecting students from Carnegie Mellon University and the State Correctional Institute (SCI) at Somerset, and an Inside-Out Program run by Haley Zettler at University of North Texas. In our training section, an important announcement is made, letting prospective trained instructors know that the virtual training is now 5 days instead of 6!

Inside-Out's long-anticipated 25th Anniversary event took place in Philadelphia this November! In this newsletter edition, we incorporated stories from November and December. In this edition of the Inside-Out Newsletter, we highlight our upcoming training dates while sharing some of the top stories from Inside-Out this month. Renee Heberle discusses "Glass House", the magazine published by People for Change, an alumni think tank of the University of Toledo. A new podcast episode spotlights Vancouver Island University's Inside-Out Program with students Chris Lamoureux and Thea Karmazynski. An academic paper co-written by Cassandra Philippon, Kevin A. Wright, Cody W. Telep, and Olivia P. Shaw discusses the life-changing potential of Inside-Out Programs across the globe. Christina Rivers of DePaul University shares the ways the Inside-Out Program facilitates a powerful experience for her students. The Beyond the Stonewalls Advisory Collective (BSWAC), a community-based think tank in Australia, continues to work with Corrections Victoria and other stakeholders to improve policies and practices by establishing common ground resulting in valuable and effective change. An Inside-Out course developed in collaboration between the Penn State Bellisario College of Communications and the Restorative Justice Initiative, led by Shaheen Pasha, engages in discussions on the intersections of journalism and the justice system from inside the jail walls. This edition of our newsletter features 'Justice is as Justice Does' - a piece written by Inside-Out training coach Joe Schwartz discussing how a group of nine formerly-incarcerated men and women met with 12 prosecutors from the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office for two hours to enter into a dialogue about issues of crime and justice. Additionally, we have another piece titled 'Traveling Transformations' written by Andrea Zittlau, Brenda Kucirka, and Jayne Thompson discussing creative workshops run in partnership with SCI Waymart in Pennsylvania. Other highlights include an Inside-Out closing ceremony for the UNT Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program organized by Haley Zettler, the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program at Boston College and the newly-launched College Pathways Program led by Matt DelSesto, and much more!

In the final edition of Volume 2, we highlight the first-ever Penn State Brandywine Inside-Out Closing Ceremony at George W. Hill Correctional Facility, as well as graduation day for Keystone College and SCI Waymart Inside-Out students.
An announcement is made celebrating the election of Rhea Ballard-Thrower to the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) 2023 Board of Directors, a collaboration with an out-of-state high school student group, and Gregory Bruno’s newly released book “Theory and Practice for Literacy in the Prison Classroom: An Inquiry Approach for Students and Educators”. Additionally, we share about the Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis Spirit and Place Festival and a re-entry simulation at SCI Albion.

In the August 2022 edition of our newsletter, we share some exciting news as Jay Barth, who took the Inside-Out Training in 2018, was named Director of the William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Muhlenberg’s Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program receives a $231,000 federal grant to expand its efforts to use education as a tool to end mass incarceration and support citizenship and democracy.

Edition 7 of the Inside-Out Newsletter brings stories of hope and healing! Our opening piece features a reflection on "From Trauma to Resilience" a new Inside-Out class just piloted at Vancouver Island University. Kenneth Butler, Yusef Pierce, and Daniel Duron’s achievements are highlighted in an NPR article as they discuss their academic experience with Pitzer College’s Inside-Out Program taught by Inside-Out trained instructor Nigel Boyle. A PBS Interview features Kevin Wright, Director of ASU’s Center for Correctional Solutions, and Bruce Ward, an ASU student who took part in their Inside-Out program. Richard Strong, a teacher’s aide in Albion College’s Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program is showing what’s possible through the power of education. In addition to his work with Inside-Out, Strong is a 4.0 dean’s list student, Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society member, and a member of the MDOC’s mentoring program to help support others with mental health issues. Also included in this edition is our Inside-Out T-shirt/Tote bag order form - show your support by wearing Inside-Out gear!

In edition 6 of the Inside-Out Newsletter, we share about an innovative multidisciplinary Inside-Out class offered at UM-Dearborn and highlight free Inside-Out courses for formerly incarcerated and justice-involved community students. Ohio Northern University criminal justice graduate Christafer Suarez reflects his life-changing experience with Inside-Out and DePaul University Sankofa Black Student Formation Program hosts a celebration of the wealth of Black excellence where Christina Rivers’ Inside-Out class received the Excellence in Scholarship, Perseverance, and Solidarity award. Pitzer College Inside-Out Pathway-to-BA program graduates walked the stage to receive their diplomas and alumnus Freddy Cisneros ’21, who graduated last year through the program, has been accepted to the Executive Fellowship Program, a 10-month public policy fellowship.

The first newsletter in our second volume recaps our December 14th, 2021 Zoom session – 'A Celebration of Voices: Inspiring Stories From the Inside-Out' – led by panelists Jesse Dorsz (Maryland), April Lee (Philly), Kenny Matthews (West Virginia), Giovanni Reid (Philly), and Joe Schwartz (Philly) and moderated by Inside-Out Alumni and Staff, John Pace. Also in this issue – we share new data released from the Prison Policy Initiative showing how inadequate, uneven, and unsustained policy changes have been in regards to prisons, jails, probation, and parole.
